21st January - Greg fails to find form
In the Melbourne Heat, Greg crashed out to Paul Goldstein. The second round defeat was Greg's third in four matches this year. Despite winning the second set there was little he could to to tame the American, who produced the goods in blustery conditions. For those in the UK highlights! can be seen on BBC at 5pm tonight.
18th January - Greg battles through
Greg came through in four sets against Scott Draper despite having some back trouble. Once again the word battle suitably describes his performance - but in the end it was a first victory in 1999 against a tough home favourite. Besides the niggling back injury Greg had to cope with Ballboys determined to throw balls at him, and a crazy fan (a postman known to Greg) in the crowd. Greg plays Paul Goldstein of the USA in round 2. Paul is ranked 189 in the world.
18th January - Greg plays tonight
Greg starts his campaign tonight. Rumours today suggest he is suffering from a few back problems as a result of the extra training he has been putting in.
15th January - Tough Start for Greg
Greg will have to hit fifth gear immediately at the Australian Open as he runs up against home favourite Scott Draper in the first round. Although Greg didn't play Scott in 1998, he met his brother Mark in that infamous Wimbledon encounter. If Greg should progress past the first round he should find the next couple of matches a little less strenuous. But with the form Greg is currently in we will worry about that when it happens. I'm not going to tempt fate by listing his section of the draw here. If you want to see it go to The Australian Open Site.
14th January - Greg is Seeded 8th for Aus Open
13th January - And Again with Apologies...
As reported earlier in the week on the Message Board we have been having technical difficulties in updating this site recently. Hopefully now things are returning to normal. I hope I will be able to say the same about Greg soon .. two first round defeats doesn't bode well.
6th January - Things can only get better...
Greg crashed out of the Qatar Open late last night losing in three sets to the German Bernd Karbacher. Greg won the first set and had two match points in the second but couldn't close it out. Not to worry though - there's quite a lot of tennis left to play yet in 1999.
5th January - Battersea Confirmed
Greg today confirmed his entry into the first 'home' tournament of the year at Battersea Park. The tournament begins on the 22nd February and is unique in that it is held in a huge marquee, you must remember it now... Meanwhile we await news of Greg's first round encounter with Karbacher.
4th January - Karbacher First on Greg's List
Greg will play Bernd Karbacher of Germany in the first round of his first tournament of 1999 in Doha. Greg is 'a joint top seed' with Tim Henman for this event, a bizarre idea created by the organisers. In my mind Tim is ranked 7 in the world and Greg 9 and their seedings should reflect that (i.e. 1 and 2 respectively) but what do I know...
