Greg News : October 98

Original match reports and updates from the fan-site archive, presented in a responsive reading layout.

30th October 1998 - Greg Crashes to Jonas

Greg's fighting spirit evaded him as he crashed out in two short sets to the swede Jonas Bjorkman. This defeat also puts him out of the race for Hannover. Next week he plays in Paris. He is seeded and has received a bye in the first round, he will then play Kiefer or a Qualifier.

29th October - Greg Puts Jinx to Rest

There was a time not so long ago when Rusedski fans groaned when we saw Australian Pat Rafter in Greg's section of a draw. No longer. Greg completed his second consecutive victory in a month against Rafter to storm into the quarter finals.

Greg needed three tight sets to pull of a superb victory, using his all court game to much better effect. He next plays Bjorkman.

28th October - Greg Cruises past Stoltenburg!!

Or at least that's what the headline should have read. Greg took the first set on a tiebreak and was then 5-2 up in the second with 5 match points when the match took a turn. Stoltenburg rallied and moved the second set on to a tiebreak. The first point of which though was controversial.

Greg served his first serve and heard a call which he thought was let when it turned out to be fault. He only found this out though as soon as he had put his next serve out as well. He was not amused, and the second set tiebreak quickly ran away as did his temper.

In front of barely more than 50 spectators Greg sorted himself out to come through a decisive tiebreak in the final set. Probably though this should be rated as a good result considering the fact Greg is under the weather a bit having picked up a nasty cold...

26th October - Greg back on Court and TV

Greg joins the majority of the top 30 players in Stuttgart this week for the EuroCard Open. Seeded 13, he has a bye in the first round but will then play either Stoltenburg or Prinosil. Prinosil was of course his conquerer at the beginning of the month in Basle.

Greg can be seen on TV this coming weekend on Channel 4 in a programme called No Balls Allowed. The programme goes out at lunchtime on Sat 31st October.

22nd October - Davis Cup News

Regular visitors will have now noticed that I have launched a "Partner Site" for Greg's site called DC99. It has been setup in order to carry news of an important announcement which should be made in the next week. Keep in touch with both sites to find out exactly what we mean. To access the new site simply click on any of the DC99 logos.

19th October - Greg up to 13th in Rankings

18th October - Greg Crashes

Despite being 4-1 up in the first set Greg crashed out yesterday to Karol Kucera. The Slovakian tied things up in two straightforward sets as Greg lost the spark that had seen him beat some top players in the previous rounds. The week as a whole though was a good basis on which to defend his points from last year.

17th October - Rafter finally Beaten

Greg finally overcame his bad run of results against Pat Rafter beating him confortably in two sets. He plays Karol Kucera in the semi-final of the Vienna Trophy today. A win would see him repeat his achievement in last years tournament where he reached the final.

16th October - Muster done, Rafter next

Greg breezed past Thomas Muster in straight sets last night to earn a show down with US Open champion Pat Rafter. Muster showed little resilience against Greg to the disappointment of the home crowd. Another attractive quarter final tie is Sampras vs Henman....

14th October - Greg finds his Form

Greg battled though, in the manner we are getting used to, against seeded Yevgeny Kafelnikow last night to earn a victory that should give him a much needed morale boost.

He completed the victory via a final set tiebreak, to move him into Round two and a match against Thomas Muster.

12th October - Greg plays Kafelnikov

Greg has been handed a tough draw for this weeks Vienna Tournament. He plays seventh seeded Kafelnikov in the first round. The match is not scheduled for today. (Good to see Tim winning in Basle, nice to keep the trophy in the country!)

8th October - Good news first

Britain have been rewarded in the Davis Cup Draw with a plum first round tie against the United States .... at HOME. It makes the mouth water. The LTA have said a decision on venue will be made quickly, but they are said to be looking for an indoor arena capable of holding 10,000. Choices appear to be Wembley Arena the NIA, Manchesters Nynex or the Newcastle Telewest Arena. The tie takes place at the beginning of April. Tickets are sure to sell fast. Along with the Battersea Park tournament, now in it's 2nd year, this should make for a fascinating spring of tennis in GB.

Now for the bad news. Greg lost today to Prinosil of Germany, going out in two close sets. This could have quite serious effects on his ranking, having won here last year. Yesterday though he cruised past the German Qualifier Axel Pretsch comfortably.

7th October - Britain Snubbed

GB have been ignored in the seedings for next year's World Group Davis Cup draw. Despite having a combining ranking of only 25 Tim and Greg are apparently not good enough to be considered a top 8 team. The seeded countries are finalists Sweden and Italy, then US, France, Australia, Czech Republic, Spain and Germany. We'll just have to win it the hard way...

Greg defends his title in Basle this week starting out against unknown German player - Axel Pretsch. The winner will play David Prinosil.

5th October - Greg loses in ... France

Sorry thought Toulouse was a dodgy pun to use. Anyway Greg did lose in Toulouse but it was in the Final - unfortunately though it was to Jan Siemerink who also dumped Greg out of the US Open final. By all reports Greg didn't have his usual bite, especially on serve, despite having played some of his best tennis in earlier rounds.

4th October - Greg in the Final

Greg has progressed to the final of this week's tournament in Toulouse. He hasn't dropped a set so far beating Goellner, Medvedev and Kiefer in the process. He play's Siemerink in the final today. Apologies for the lack of updates this week - I've been too busy. Results page to be updated as soon as possible.
