30th August Greg flops, but bigger things await
Greg lost to Marat Safin in the final at Boston with the youngster firing too many aces for Greg to cope with. As ever Greg was upbeat as he moved onto Flushing Meadows - looking forward to a first round clash with Ferrero on Tuesday or Wednesday.
29th August Greg hot for Flushing Meadow
The idea was that Greg should use what little match practice he could get this week to warm-up for the US Open at Flushing Meadow. In practice Greg has hit a hot vein of form which has carried him to the Final. Last night he beat Arnaud Clement of France in three sets. Today he plays Marat Safin for the title. 6-4 5-7 6-2
28th August What a week!
A week that started off very tentatively and uncertainly for Greg is now turning into an excellent warm-up for the US Open. Greg last night beat Swede, Jonas Bjorkman, in straight sets to progress to a semi final with Arnaud Clement. This excellent performance also means he is defending many of the points won last year at Long Island. 7-5 6-3
26th August Greg into Quarters
Greg sailed past Salon Peppas of Greece in two comfortable sets to earn himself a quarter final against Jonas Bjorkman. It also means he has obtained his initial target of getting three matches under his belt before next week. 6-3 6-3
25th August Greg comes through well
Greg obtained a great result in the first round of the US Pro Tennis Championships beating Kenneth Carlsen in three sets. In his first match back from a toe injury which has kept him out for three weeks, Greg lost the first set on a tiebreak but then began to flow. For details of who he plays next see the draw sheet link above. 6-7(3) 6-2 7-5
Meanwhile Greg found out today that he will play Ferrero of Spain in Round One at the US Open that starts next week. Greg is seeded 9th.
22nd August Greg prepares to play
Greg is preparing to play his first match since Gstaad in early July this week when he takes on a Qualifier in the first round of the US Pro Tennis Championships in Boston. He is seeded 1st in this warm-up tournament for the US Open
14th August Greg STILL Suffering
Hopes of Greg playing in Indianapolis have now been dashed. He has a wild card waiting for him at Boston, and is hopeful of filling it. He hopes there to get three matches under his belt before the US Open which starts on the 30th August. Optimistic as ever - Greg at least points out that he will be fresh and eager to play!
10th August Greg Still Suffering
A toe injury suffered at the French Open has prevented Greg from playing since his defeat at Gstaad after Wimbledon. He hopes to be able to compete in Indianapolis next week, and then to receive a Wild Card for either Boston or Long Island for the week before the US Open. He is receiving daily treatment. He has though, as a consolation, moved up to 9th in the Rankings.
17th July Greg returns to Top 10
The latest rankings see Greg placed at Number 10 despite his recent first round defeat. So few points (currently 40) separate those players between position 8 and 15 mean that the next few weeks could be very decisive. This though is to Greg's benefit as he has no points to defend until Indianapolis at the end of August. It could well lead to a situation where players are jumping up and down the rankings for no apparent reason.
9th July Greg takes a Holiday
The traditional mid season break started for Greg with his defeat by Rosset in Gstaad. Greg will not compete again on the tour until the Mercedes-Benz tournament in LA. This event is held during the last week of July, from Monday 26th.
6th July Surprise appearance ends in predictable defeat
In an unusual step Greg decided to compete in the picturesque setting of Gstaad in the week after Wimbledon. The event is on clay in the Swiss Alps. After the pressure of being a home favourite during the grass court season the tables were turned when he faced Marc Rosset (the fans favourite at this event). Despite little air resistance to Greg's serve at this high altitude tournament, Rusedski went out in three sets. 6-7(2) 7-6(4) 2-6
